Debbie Allen took such good care of that young cast. Having them add to their contracts that they would get a chance write and direct episodes. She made sure those young actors walked away with additional marketable skills. She showed them they could contribute as artists to other aspects production. What a force she is!

THIS JASMINE GUY IS AN ENTIRE VIBE.... She is really apart of the Black Revolution, very underrated. In fact it was interesting to know how the cast was mistreat underrecognized. Such a powerful sitcom for the culture. They were left out of Hollywood, disrespected. I'm not surprised, but glad they were because our most powerful stories and experiences are left out of Hollywood. These shows that our left out are often OUR most PRIZED gift to our communities. Thank you A Different World, I chose Clark Atlanta University because of ALL OF YOU!!

@Elite_Khris99 Thanks for the wonderful explanation! I absolutely agree with your salient points about Jasmine Guy. What I love about her is that she is unapologetically militant about her views and she encompasses all in referencing her positions on the black experience. She doesn't treat us like a monolith but at the same time speaks to us all. Thanks again!

@Barcelona Chair Hahahaha. It means relatable in a sense. Like we are the same...what she's saying, doing, and being is the same as me. I specifically meant it as her being so pro black and loving who she is and standing up for what she believes in. That's a mood because I love being black and being proud to be black.

All these years later, I know for a fact that "A Different World" seeped into my subconscious as a kid. Before representation was a mainstream conversation, Dewayne Wayne and Whitley were representing for the culture and schoolin' us. I'm forever grateful and indebted that I could see my future through them as a child. I pursued that dream I never even knew was possible. FAMU, I ❤ thee! Kadeem and Jasmine you guys helped make dreams come true! Big Love! Big Kudos! A million roses ⚘⚘⚘ to you both--the entire cast, crew, producers and yes, even the network! Thank you!

Debbie Allen truly turned the show around after season one and took a deeper dive into character development. A Different World is apart of the fabric of many of our childhoods/young adulthoods. (Although Jasmine thought that Whitley was over dressed, it just seemed like a rich, snobby southern belle was supposed to dress like that. 😆)

Great, great interview. I enjoyed how real they both were and for making the ( invisible, visible) we often look at characters and form an opinion about how great things on a set are. I am grateful they brought out how hard Debbie Allen fought to have the young people take opportunities they may have passed up because they were not in front of the camera. Now they can be in front, behind and write, lessons for life because someone cared enough to incourage them to take every opportunity.

First, Debbie Allen really looked out for the cast by having it on the contract that they direct. That way, the could have director skills long after the show ends if they choose too. And this gave them opportunity to see what goes on when filming. Then the wedding episode is my most favorite and memorable scene and to learn it was difficult for them because in real life it’s disrespectful. I was just glad it was Whitney and Dwayne Wayne were the ones who wed. The show is such a classic and the other thing that I love is the relationship that Dwayne and his mom played by Patty LaBelle’s Character had. And how she wanted him to be with Kimberley because of her teeth, because the teeth tells you a lot about a person (which is somewhat true 😂). And how she could not stand Whitney at first but she had to respect her because that’s who her son loved. I mean the entire cast were just spectacular and part of my childhood. I love them and I loved the show. Thank you Breakfast Club for having them come out. This interview could have been longer, I kept rewinding and watching it because I didn’t want to miss anything. The flowers and decors was a nice touch and I’m glad they corrected the champagne bottle but Jasmine was polite and drank the first glass anyway 😂.

They should go on tour together or start a talk show themselves. They should do something that is an extension of “It’s a Different world” ; keeping our issues on top!!!!! Inviting an open forum. They are the shot. . . They are the ones to do just this. Even a podcast on the internet . . . Something . . . Our people are needing this now!!

Jasmine Guy is gorgeously authentic and as real as they come. Debbie Allen is also the real deal. My best friend's daughter had ADHD at age 7 and couldn't sit still. She enrolled her in every kind of sport to try to harness her energy. One Thanksgiving I took her to see a children's musical. All she did was spin and dance and try to jump on the stage. Later I told her mother she should enroll her in dance classes. My friend took her to Ms. Allen's dance academy. Four years later the kid was touring as the lead in The Lion King and under contract with Disney.

And you know something, i was diagnosed with ADHD as a kid too, but here's the thing: i feel like alot of cases of "ADHD" are just children having a hard time caring about shit that just doesnt interest them. Think about how we literally force kids to just sit & listen in class. Kids are naturally energetic, so i believe the current way of teaching them is poor. I was the same way: i just had a hard time caring about alot of the bullshit they tried to make us learn in class--it was just so dry, and many teachers did a poor job of making us understand why this was important to our personal lives. it was just "shut up and learn." But when it came to music & theater, suddenly, i could focus so good, it was like time stopped, because those things were my natural passions. I believe if we could somehow incorporate more movement & passion into learning, we'd see less cases of "ADHD", and we'd see children excelling more because we're giving their natural abilities a chance to shine, instead of punishing them for it. Debbie Allen seems like the kind of person who brings out a person's strengths, and thats the kind of person we need managing our people's development.

I met Jasmine guy when she came to my hotel back in 2013 she was the most down to earth sweetest celebrity I've ever met. She was so low-key and didn't need any extra special attention . she was literally the sweetest ever. Give these legends their flowers Edit: I worked at the hotel front desk it wasn't my hotel room.

I could tell Jasmine would’ve been willing and able to share some more about Tupac if she was asked in this interview. I just felt that vibe when they were talking about him that she was okay with and ready to share a little more about him if asked, looking forward to hearing more about what she did with Afeni and hope she and Kadeem both come back on the breakfast club

The best interview from TBC of the year plus CTG gave them their flowers. Bill Cosby open doors for black actors and have standards and Debbie Allen blew the doors on the second season of ADW and she was way ahead of her time of TV taking about serious topics. The 90's of entertainment was the golden era for us.

Wow! Great show. I gained a lot from it. In hindsight, that T.V. show impacted and cultivated Black people on so many levels and speaks volume to elevation, awareness and education. THANK YOU to Debbie Allen and her Team,. THEY DID THE DAMNED THANG. #ILoveMyPeople - Lady of Soul.

Kadeem is a legend. His sneaker game back in the day was unmatched. He's a real sneakerhead. In any TV show or movie, he was in his kicks were on point. This guy should be on Complex sneaker episode. He's one of the dudes that made me start collecting sneakers. No hypebeast shit. When I saw White Men Can't Jump, he had on the Infared Jordan 6. As a kid, I was instantly sold. I begged my pops for those shoes. In Spike Lee's School Daze he was rocking the Jordan 2's. Mannnnn they were too clean. This dude is a pioneer along with Will Smith with the sneakers. A different world was a classic. Great times when that show aired.

Fun fact…the show was supposed to be based around a white girl first and her experience at an HBCU, played by Meg Ryan before Marisa Tomei. However, it was retooled for the white actress to be a supporting character and for the show to be centered around Denise Huxtable as a spin off of the Cosby Show. Im glad it got retooled a second time around Jasmine and Kadeem 😊!

this was the ABSOLUTE BEST interview that The Breakfast Club has done IMO.....Kadeem and Jasmine meant so much to our culture. I grew up idolizing "Dwayne Wayne" and crushing on "Whitley Gilbert"...what an era of tv. I was 11 yrs old then when the show began and still watch those episodes today as a 46. Never gets old. I love the insight in this interview, the REAL insight that was given. Much props to Lisa Bonet in how she was treated on set...we didn't know....wow. We need more interviews like this.. too bad TBC is ending.

They Pioneered the Positivity of my Generation of wanting To Be at College, Being Classy and having Diversity without Conflict. Then the Industry Infiltrated Shows like College Hill that Showcased nothing but Drama and Ignorance. I appreciate the 80's sitcoms so much now that I am in my 50's. Both of them still Exude the same Energy That we all Loved and grew up on.....

The part I always remember and liked, was when Heavy D appeared, Whitney was introduced to him, and she couldn't get that, that was his stage name, when she walked away from him, her facial expression saying "people could be so cruel" was awesome, adding this, am a very big fan of Heavy D, now he's gone, I have the memories of him.

@Dennis Boyd Exactly, the 80s, 90s and early 2000s Black television shows were very naturally funny and very relatable. TV shows like Different world, Martin, Moesha, The parkers, Fresh prince, Family matters, Cosby’s, one on one, haft and haft, sister sister, Jamie Foxx show, Good times, and Wayne Brothers. These shows really did a great job of showing authenticity in the black communities. It’s only a very few shows show us in a positive light most times it’s more reality shows now than back than.
