Making a Bladeless Wooden Fan - Scrapwood Challenge ep38

This was one of the most fun projects I've done!
It involved plenty of problem solving, even before I started making it. I think it came out fabulous as I honestly didn't know if it would work. Although, I think a more powerful fan would take it further still and maybe I'll pursue that at a later date.
Thanks to all my Patreons who've had input in this one, encouraged me and gave me great advice!
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

I 'm pinning this comment just to address the use of a fan with blades. I didn't name this style of fan 'Bladeless" but it seems very obvious to me why it would be called that, any issue with that seems trivial to me (some comments have even included vulgarities over this point, you just need to chill out a little). If you bought a Dyson fan you would never know it had blades inside so would it matter if it did when you found out? I don't think so, it's still the same fan with no visible blades. Also how else would anyone think these fans move air, Magic? :)

I am legitimately confused when i see these things pushing air through... my eyes are just seeing a fan, completely blocked off by rings on top. How's it transferring the air flow up to the rings?

Cool design, but could have done a magnus effect contraption or something of the likes that uses air friction (or whatever magnus effect uses) to really make a bladeless fan. The reason why people are upset is that you overall used a bladed fonctionning fan to make a less optimal pretty fan.

It's a nice woodblock air mover-honestly I'd take apart my D-Fan and place it's mechanism into this thing in a second...it's a much warmer look than the silver plastic Multiple-Hundred Dollar D-Fans. That's the draw for me... The semantic difference between 'fan' and 'impeller' is more than semantic, the fan produced a linear delivery at low pressure rise. The impeller gives a non-linear delivery, and against higher pressure. The closed-face impeller in a D-Fan works more efficiently because like air-driven coolers used in industry, the higher the source of inlet pressure to the mechanism, the more it cools/induces into the flow. So you get a lot more pressure which translates to much higher flow than a straight 'fan' would. Actually, with a few more steps, a wooden inducer could be made to replace the fan entirely but would require some pretty complex milling operations. To be honest knowing what was inside the D-Fan, I expected the motive force to be from an old hand-crank style rose duster, or one of the new cordless models which does use an actual axial flow centrifugal impeller and would make much more air through the device. Taking the pieces out of a D-Fan would be cost prohibitive... The only surprise I got was the selection of an actual fan vs higher pressure/higher volume impeller since they are out there on the scrap heap in plentiful quantity. COST PROHIBITIVE OR NOT I'd still wouldn't mind taking my D-Fan apart and transferring internals into this woodblock model as it has aesthetics that knock Sir Dyson's gadget into the dirt. I personally used a Replacement Impeller from a Toro Leaf Blower ($7!) in a DIY Supercharger Arrangement for my old Datsun, being a compressor engineer by trade the semantics is what gets me paid...Don't discount finding a rose duster or other small centrifugal impeller model to scavenge for the internals and up the efficiency. This would be worth the money you pay for a D-Fan being made of wood...as opposed to (argh) plastic! Though time spent doing it manually...

One thing I always notice about these creation videos is like.. not only are they extremely talented at making something impressive from basically nothing, but they always have this fun editing and additional b roll shots and silly transitions and it’s so clear they’re thinking about the video production while making the actual thing and I’m here like.. can y’all stop being talented at multiple things I don’t even have one thing come on

Man... did I just watch a 28 minutes video without feeling bored? Anyways in the end you could have used a turbo fan to push out lots of air. This kind if craftsman needs beast inside. It shouldn't just look good. It should work great too.

The Winning Post to Win Them All(#1). - quote by Bobby Fisher , "Stainless steel can rust. Is it a lie? Is it clickbait? Or is it perhaps steel that rusts less just as this fan has hidden blades?". @the commenters in the comments section, rage less about marketed titles, e.g. Dyson fans. his thumbnail isnt clickbait as it was the correct fan in the thumbnail and refers to marketed titles. had there not been marketed titles that the vid's title could refer to, then these trolls could be correct. additionally, viewers clicked on the vid either because of the title or the thumbnail picture, and after finding out what the vid's title is referring to, they have to leave unhappy and accept that the vid is referring to what perhaps they were not wanting it to be about. welp again, rage less :P. summary: the vid did its purpose, because the viewers want to know how the thumbnail picture could work or what bladeless is referring to. with that being stated, easy debate, debate solved. for trolls, a re post.

Technically even though the blade of the fan isn’t showing , it still has a blade in it so it cannot be preferred to as a bladeless fan, (Btw you telling us to chill is more like us tellin u to chill because we are just joking around at the fact it’s not actualy bladeless so stop trying to ruin the funny content of your own video mate )

Great Craft-man for real, the funny part is, don't throw away scrap-wood, like anyone can do this, but this guy has probably $6.000 in tools and years of wood working experience. In my case I trash the pieces of scrap wood and buy a $20.00 less blade fan ( with hiding blade) no bad felling he is an expert and very detailed works. I enjoy see him working.
